Extracting useful products from toxic blue-green algae

26th September 2022 @ 8:30 pm 10:00 pm

Dr Aneika Leney, School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham

Lake slime, or blue-green algae, is found in many lakes/rivers/oceans worldwide. It is increasing due to global warming and causing huge problems, as it can produce toxins that kill fish and wildlife. Dr Leney’s team are taking this algae and extracting proteins from it. These proteins are blue and are used as natural food colorants. The proteins also transmit low levels of light efficiently so have potential uses in applications such as more efficient solar panels.
